WHY THE WORLD CUP MAKES US FEEL SO ALIVE

I'll be honest with you.


I'm not the biggest football fan. I don't know every player's name. I couldn't tell you the offside rule if my life depended on it.


But every four years, the World Cup gets me. Every. Single. Time.


There's something about it that just stops you in your tracks. You find yourself watching a match at midnight, heart pounding, completely invested in a team you'd never thought about three weeks ago. Strangers become friends over a shared goal. Whole countries hold their breath at the same moment.


It's electric. And I think I've finally worked out why.


It's not really about football.


The World Cup isn't just a sporting event. It's 32 countries showing up on the world stage and saying, we're here. We've prepared. We're going to give this everything we've got.
And watching that, the effort, the heart, the sheer will of it, does something to you.
It reminds you what humans are capable of when they commit to something.


The bit that gets me every time.


It's not the goals that move me most. It's the players who get knocked down and get back up. The ones who miss a shot and keep running. The ones who've trained in the dark, in the cold, in the quiet, for years, just for a chance at this moment.


Nobody sees those years. We only see the 90 minutes.


But those 90 minutes are built on thousands of ordinary days of choosing to show up. Days when it was hard. Days when no one was watching. Days when staying home would have been so much easier.


That kind of commitment doesn't just live in athletes. It lives in all of us. We just don't always give ourselves permission to access it.


So what does this have to do with you?


You're not training for a World Cup. Neither am I.


But I do think there's something in watching these athletes that quietly nudges us to ask ourselves, am I showing up for myself? Am I giving my body and my mind even a fraction of that same care and commitment?


Not to perform. Not to compete. Just to feel good. Strong. Like yourself.


A morning walk. A stretch. Getting off the couch and moving your body in whatever way works for you right now.


It doesn't need to be dramatic. It doesn't need to look impressive. It just needs to be yours.
